Eerie Abandoned Disney Attractions You Never Knew Existed
The Polynesian Surf Wave Machine
The Polynesian Resort’s wave machine was a brilliant idea in theory, but in practice, it caused problems. Reportedly created in 1971, the machine was to provide guests with a surfing experience without needing perfect ocean waves. However, the invention made such forceful torrents it caused severe beach erosion.
Additionally, it had issues with frequent breakdowns and could only operate for a few hours at a time. After being abandoned for almost 15 years, a crew tested the wave machine in 1985 but eventually removed it. Still, the concept persisted, and when Typhoon Lagoon opened in 1989, it included a 2.7 million gallon wave pool and early morning surfing lessons.
