Eerie Abandoned Disney Attractions You Never Knew Existed
STOLport: The Abandoned Disney World Airport
Many Disney World visitors don’t know of this airport located on Lake Buena Vista. Privately owned by Disney, the “short take-off and landing” (STOL) runway could support only four planes on the ground at a time. Scheduled flights from Tampa and other locations for guests and employees were available until Disney discontinued the passenger service in December 1972.
The airport closed in the ’80s as monorail beams were installed. Today, the landing strip is still visible and accessible to guests. The runway was unique because it played “When You Wish Upon a Star” when driven over and was a precursor to future musical roads.
