Abandoned Disney Attractions You Never Knew Existed

Submarine Voyage: 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea

Based on the 1954 Disney film of the same name, guests once rode in a submarine through a lagoon filled with sea life, mermaids, and animatronics. The 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea: Submarine Voyage was a beloved attraction at the Magic Kingdom theme park at Walt Disney World, where guests saw a ship graveyard, the North Pole, the Abyss, and Atlantis.

The finale was an attack by a giant squid before returning to the dock. Although the ride was famous, maintaining it was expensive, and it closed permanently in 1994. Until 2004, the lagoon was still there as a picturesque spot called Ariel’s Grotto before the final dismantling.
