A serial murderer is defined as a person who kills at least two individuals in various incidents that take place at different periods. Although there’s no legal definition of “serial murder,” the acts of serial killers have frequently been picked up by the media and the general public, mostly when there are several victims or the killings are carried out in a horrible or inhumane manner.
The number of such individuals who have committed crimes is at an alarming rate, but there are a few individuals that have seized the spotlight for their horrific human rights violations. The following list dives into some of the world’s most renowned serial murderers.
The Zodiac Killer
The Zodiac Killer wrote a threatening message to the Bay Area Press, where he left cryptographic protocols to be decoded, and just one of the four he provided was successfully solved. The assassin was active in California in the late ’60s and early ’70s.
His first murder occurred in 1966 when he stabbed an 18-year-old student to death in Riverside, California. The incident inspired the iconic 1971 action movie “Dirty Harry” and the highly acclaimed 2007 thriller “Zodiac.” In one of his letters, he stated: “Me- 37 and SFPD- 0” he stated that he had killed 37 people, but only seven were confirmed. The case is still open as of 2022.
